Dig in to a perfect bowl of homemade popcorn with this simple recipe, delicious as an afternoon snack or when settling in for a cozy movie night.

My family loves fresh, hot popcorn! As I’ve journeyed into scratch cooking, homemade popcorn was a must in my arsenal. I’ve tasted a range of kernels, from cheap brands at the grocery store to bags from the Amish store, and though they’re all delicious, the taste difference is very noticeable. I also opt for healthier oils like coconut oil, and go light on the toppings (most of the time!).
Personally, I love the flavor the coconut oil gives the final popcorn, so most days I add a touch of salt and call it a day. My friends got me hooked on an unusual essential oil combination, added with the kernels before popping: rosemary, lime, and black pepper vitality oils. I recently discovered an amazing sweet popcorn when my daughter requested kettle corn at home. I’ve also tasted butter, cheese powder, or M&Ms. All delicious! Let’s pop to it!
Ingredients
1/2 cup Popcorn kernels
3-4 Tablespoons of Oil – I prefer unrefined coconut oil
1/2-1 Tablespoon Salt – I use Redmond Real Salt (quantity varies by taste and type of salt used)

How to Make Homemade Popcorn on the Stove
Plop coconut oil into a pot with 3-5 kernels. Cover and heat on medium heat.
When the kernels in the pot pop, your oil is hot and ready. Pour in the remaining kernels. Cover.

According to Amish Country Popcorn, Inc., “Agitate the pot until the popcorn ceases to pop.” Here’s what this means to me:
Gently move around the pot to coat the kernels in oil, repeating periodically until the kernels begin popping. Once popping, shake the kernels around the pot to keep them coated and hot, but not burning in one spot. Shake and rest, shake and rest. I place a towel over the top of my lid and wrap it around the handles to keep the lid in place and not burn my hands. When the popping stops (no pops for about 5-10 seconds), remove the pot from the heat and let it sit for a minute in case any more pop.
Sprinkle and toss in salt (and any other add-ins), adding more salt to taste. Enjoy!
